Unexpectedly High Energies of X-rays Obtained in Gas Discharges Explained.

A researcher from LPC2E (Sebastien Celestin), in collaboration with Victor P. Pasko from Penn State University and Anne Bourdon from École Polytechnique, have uncovered a new mechanism explaining why electrons in high-voltage discharges can gain unexpectedly high energies. Their study, published in the prestigious journal Physical Review Letters, reveals how “runaway electrons” accelerate through a feedback process involving x-ray radiation and photoelectric absorption. This discovery helps resolve a long-standing debate in x-ray generation, advancing our understanding of high-voltage technologies.
